The Issue

As concerned residents of Marco Island, we have witnessed a disturbing trend that threatens both our marine life and the safety of beach-goers. Groups of fishermen off our shores are engaging in blood baiting to lure large sharks from deep water. Using kayaks and drones, they drop bait to catch these majestic creatures. Once caught, these sharks become disoriented and struggle to return to their natural deep-water habitat, often lingering in shallow waters for hours after release.

This practice not only disrupts the natural balance of our marine ecosystem but also poses a significant threat to public safety. The increased shark activity closer to shore endangers children and adults. These sharks struggle to return to the deep water prior to the start of the day, posing a significant threat to swimmers. The stress that the animals are under during the catch and release process can cause abnormal changes in behavior, which will result in a serious and dangerous incident if there are not changes made now.

According to Oceana.org, overfishing is one of the biggest threats facing shark populations worldwide. In addition, scientific studies suggest that changes in shark behavior due to human activities can have unforeseen consequences on local ecosystems (source: Journal of Marine Science).

We urge local authorities in Marco Island, Florida - where this issue hits close home - to take immediate action against these harmful practices. We call for stricter regulations on fishing practices including a complete ban on blood baiting and measures ensuring safe distances between fishing activities and swimming areas.
