Background

In 2020, a Black VA Police officer took initiative to bring his department into compliance with constitutional provisions, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure (FRCP), proper booking and arrest procedures, and the correct filing of federal charges. His efforts were aimed at ensuring that the department followed the law and upheld the rights of individuals under its jurisdiction.

Discrimination and Retaliation

Despite his dedication to upholding legal standards, the officer faced severe discrimination and retaliation over the course of two years. His work schedule was abruptly changed to a never-before-used night shift, isolating him from his peers and disrupting his work-life balance. Additionally, a package from the FBI intended for the officer was taken and hidden from him without notification. He was also subjected to racially charged jokes and harassment from colleagues, further compounding the hostile work environment.

EEO Complaint and Substantiation

In response to the ongoing discrimination, the officer filed an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaint. The VA’s own investigation substantiated the officer’s claims of discrimination based on race, confirming the unjust treatment he endured. Despite this vindication, the systemic issues within the department were not adequately addressed.

Forced to Leave

The officer, who had sought only to ensure that the department followed the law, was ultimately ignored, mistreated, and forced to leave the department due to the pervasive discrimination he faced. His departure highlights the significant challenges that exist for those who strive to promote justice and compliance within their organization.
