The Issue

Transitioning from the special needs support department into a mainstream college environment has been incredibly challenging for me, particularly in the English and Math departments. The noise in the classrooms and the overwhelming amount of information leads to severe distress, and I have experienced several meltdowns, including an incident today where I almost broke my toe. This overwhelming pressure is the reason behind this petition—a plea for change not just for me, but for everyone who struggles as I do.

Mandatory education in English and Math has become a burdensome requirement for many students, especially those with special needs. Forcing these subjects often leads to anxiety and stress in a challenging environment, which diminishes the overall learning experience. Students transitioning from special support systems into mainstream education are often put under immense pressure, risking their mental well-being for the sake of adhering to outdated educational mandates.

Schools face the threat of losing funding if they do not comply with teaching English and Math, even if it is against the best interests of their students. This creates a broken system where educational institutions must prioritize funds over the needs and capabilities of their students.

A solution would be to remove the mandate requiring English and Math to be forcibly taught, allowing schools to tailor educational programs to suit individual student needs. This flexibility would empower educators to offer diverse and suitable educational pathways, ensuring all students have the opportunity to learn in ways that are effective and aligned with their capabilities.

Removing these constraints would also alleviate the pressure on special needs students transitioning to mainstream settings, creating an adaptive environment where focus could be placed on subjects students are naturally inclined toward or interested in exploring. This approach not only respects the individual learning process but also encourages a more inclusive and understanding educational atmosphere.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a change in our educational system. Help us ensure that every student's needs are met, and that schools are not penalized for prioritizing individual learning needs over rigid academic standards. A more personalized education system can bring about significant positive change, fostering an environment that truly nurtures the potential of every student. Sign to support the cause of removing compulsory English and Math education requirements for a better, more inclusive future.
