The Issue

At the age of 21, I, an African American male, found myself sentenced to 30 years in prison for my first serious adult felony, alongside three white co-defendants whose combined sentences were less than mine. Despite being charged for the same offenses—assault and robbery in the first degree—I faced a punishment that was disproportionately high. My personal experience reflects a much broader issue at play in Kitsap County's criminal justice system: systemic racial bias.

The racial disparity within our justice system is not just a personal tragedy but a community crisis that affects all of Kitsap County. According to data from the Puget Sound Regional Council, Black and Indigenous residents, who make up a smaller percent of the population, are disproportionately represented in arrests, charges, and prison sentences here. Specifically, the imprisonment rate stands at 231 per 100,000 residents, but in low-income neighborhoods, these rates skyrocket, highlighting a pattern of racial discrimination and economic injustice.

Systemic racial bias within the criminal justice system not only violates the principles of fairness and equality but perpetuates cycles of disadvantage across generations. It is vital to address these issues head-on by advocating for policy changes that ensure fairness and equity. Important steps include comprehensive training for law enforcement on biases, revising sentencing guidelines to eliminate disparities, and creating independent review boards to oversee potential cases of discrimination.

This situation is not unique to Kitsap County, but we have a responsibility to lead the way in reforming our systems. By shining light on these injustices and working towards a more equitable system, we can ensure that justice is truly served for all members of our community. Sign this petition to urge the Kitsap County officials to take immediate action toward reforming our criminal justice system, bringing it closer to equity and justice for everyone. Your voice counts; together, we can make a difference for the future of Kitsap County.
