Many of us have deeply personal experiences and feelings surrounding the issue of police accountability. Our distress grows as we see no clear answer or change in sight. We're exhausted by the recurring lack of responsibility for the wrongdoings of officers protected by the shield of qualified immunity. This legal principle allows law enforcement to avoid facing penalties for their actions, even when they are proven to violate citizen's constitutional rights. Citations conducted by Reuters show that in 2020, qualified immunity shielded officers in 57% of outrageous conduct cases brought forward. This is not a procedure that engenders trust in the rule of law or faith in our justice system's ability to effectively hold law enforcement to account. It is time to end qualified immunity for police officers. The tax payers are the ones paying for their mistakes
