End Post-Separation Abuse

End Post-Separation Abuse

The Issue

Choosing to leave a relationship or marriage that is no longer working is an important step forward, but problems often continue past the separation, and sometimes they get worse. Post-separation abuse is common, and it involves much more than physical violence. An abusive ex-partner might try to cause humiliation, shame, financial or psychological harm in order to maintain control and/or gain an edge.

Post-separation abuse including using government connections to set an ex-partner up to be illegally monitored, denied proper legal help, and severely limited regarding opportunities to work and participate in the community are severe violations of personal privacy and dignity. These actions not only cause immense psychological distress and emotional trauma to the victims but also disrupt their everyday lives, creating an atmosphere of hopelessness and uncertainty.

Statistics indicate that millions of individuals experience some form of these abuses annually, with many cases remaining unreported due to fear of escalation or lack of trust in authorities. Post-separation abuse, in particular, is a pressing issue, often occurring after an intimate relationship ends and is aimed at maintaining control or punishing the victim.

The consequences of these actions can be devastating; victims may experience anxiety, depression, PTSD, and in severe cases, the threat of physical harm. It's imperative that legal systems worldwide take action to prevent such abuses by enforcing stricter laws and ensuring proper training for law enforcement to handle these cases with the urgency they deserve.

Moreover, we must enhance protection for victims by establishing dedicated support services, such as hotlines, counseling, and safe houses, that enable them to seek help without fear of retribution. Public awareness campaigns must be launched to educate communities about the signs and dangers of stalking and domestic abuse, fostering environments where victims feel supported and empowered to come forward.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers and authorities to prioritize the fight against post-separation abuse, illegal monitoring, bullying, shunning, exclusion, and harassment. Together, we can create a safer world for everyone.
