End placement of trans men in women's prisons in Washington state
The Issue
My sister almost lost her life to a man who later became a trans woman in prison. Despite his previous violent behavior, including attacking a female guard, he was transferred to a women's prison where he continued to assault women—in this case, under the system's protection and at the expense of taxpayers' money. Meanwhile, my sister is left suffering from anxiety and trauma, struggling to get the counseling and medication she so desperately needs. This man was given the opportunity for a sex change while in prison, whereas my sister is left to fend for herself.
This begs the question: Why do offenders like him receive state-funded sexual reassignment treatments while their victims are denied proper support? It is appalling that Washington State prioritizes the rights of prisoners over the innocent women who are left to suffer from their actions.
Statistics show that prisons in the U.S. are ill-equipped to handle transgender issues, often putting vulnerable inmates at risk. However, moving offenders who have demonstrated a pattern of violence against women into facilities that make it easier for them to continue such behavior is reckless and endangers more victims.
JK Rowling, author of Harry Potter, even highlighted my sister's offender on social media to raise awareness about this injustice. It is shocking that such a travesty could occur in a country that prides itself on justice and equality.
Something must be done to address this staggering oversight. We demand that the Washington State Department of Corrections take immediate action:
1. Reassess the criteria for transferring inmates to facilities that align with their gender identity. Violence against women should be a disqualifying factor.
2. Allocate funds equitably, ensuring victims receive adequate mental health resources and support.
3. Develop stringent policies to protect inmates against violence from other inmates, regardless of their gender or gender identity.
We owe it to the victims who have suffered not only assault but the trauma of an unjust system. Please sign this petition to bring justice and safety back to our prison system in Washington State, and to protect women like my sister from further harm.
