I serve as the Legal and Policy Administrator & Advocate at Peace Ridge Sanctuary, a well-respected and accredited nonprofit sanctuary in Brooks, Maine. Our mission is to offer lifelong care to over 650 rescued farmed and companion animals across four licensed facilities while stewarding nearly 2,000 acres of wildlife habitat. Time and again, our sanctuary has opened its doors to porcine victims of pig scrambles, receiving numerous requests each year to provide sanctuary to animals obtained from these events.

Pig scrambles and mutton busting events, often held at local fairs, are not only inhumane but also set a worrying precedent for the way we relate to animals. These events teach children that it is acceptable to frighten and chase animals for sport. While the excitement of these events might be entertaining, the reality for the animals involved is far less forgiving. Being forced into stressful environments where they are chased, caught, and manhandled is traumatic and dangerous for these animals.

In Maine, where the beauty of nature and the importance of our environment run deep in our heritage, it's crucial that we extend the same respect to all living creatures. The Ossipee Valley Fairgrounds in Hiram, Maine, has the opportunity to lead by example by ceasing these events and implementing a policy that reflects a compassionate and responsible attitude towards animals.

Studies have shown that exposure to animal cruelty can desensitize individuals, leading to a lack of empathy and compassion, traits we undoubtedly do not want to nurture in our future generations. Instead, we must teach kindness, respect, and a genuine understanding of animal welfare.

I am calling upon the Ossipee Valley Fairgrounds to take a stand and make a positive change for our community and the animals residing within it. By implementing a policy that bans pig scrambles and mutton busting, the fairground can promote a more humane approach to entertainment and serve as a role model for event centers everywhere.
