The Issue
I have personally witnessed oxen being whipped in the faces, as they wince in pain. It broke my heart to see these gentle giants, who have served humans for centuries, being subjected to such cruelty in the name of entertainment. It is deeply troubling that events like oxen pulls are still allowed to take place at fairs in Western Massachusetts.
Oxen pulls may seem like harmless fun to spectators, but the reality for the animals is far from it. These contests involve teams of oxen being forced to pull heavy weights, often exceeding 12,000 pounds, across a distance. The animals are coerced with loud commands, prods, and, distressingly, whips. The physical and mental strain on the oxen is undeniable, and it is simply inhumane to continue subjecting them to such treatment.
Numerous animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society of the United States, have condemned the use of animals in such events. Studies have shown that animals participating in these pulls are at a significant risk of injury, both short-term and long-term. The physical exertion can cause muscle strain, fractures, and even heatstroke, especially during the hot summer months when these fairs take place.
Western Massachusetts, known for its rich agricultural history and close-knit communities, prides itself on values of compassion and respect for all living beings. By ending oxen pulls, we can uphold those values and set an example for others to follow.
We urge fair organizers, local government officials, and community leaders to step up and prohibit these cruel events. Let’s find alternative ways to celebrate our traditions that do not involve animal distress. We can replace oxen pulls with activities that honor our agricultural heritage, like educational exhibits on sustainable farming methods or competitions showcasing innovation in agriculture.
Please sign this petition to end oxen pulls at all fairs in Western Massachusetts. Together, we can ensure a kinder and more compassionate future for our fairs and festivals.
