The Issue

Brampton, known for its safe and peaceful community, has recently become a hub for organized crime. Local businesses and residents are increasingly living in fear due to the rise in criminal activities involving extortion, which also affects the safety of the entire community.

South asian residents of Brampton are being targeted by extortion. Families aren't even allowed to go about their day without fearing for their lives.

Organized extortion has far-reaching consequences. It cripples local businesses as they are forced to divert their resources to meet the demands of these criminals. Many companies have reported threats of violence or damage to property if they fail to comply with these extortion demands. This environment of fear affects economic growth and discourages new investments in the community.

We are calling for stronger bail rules and sentencing for individuals caught engaging in extortion. Current laws and penalties are insufficient to deter criminals from engaging in such acts. We propose the implementation of certain bail conditions to ensure that offenders are not easily released back into the community, where they can continue their criminal activities. Furthermore, we need harsher sentencing guidelines that reflect the severity of their crimes and serve to deter future crimes.

Secondly, we, as the citizens of Brampton, can not defend ourselves when people break into our homes or even shoot at us. This is where we believe the government should implement a policy similar to castle law, allowing residents to use self-defence against intruders. Allowing them to protect their families from break-ins or shootings at their homes. The aspect of shooting at homes is a step towards extortion; these criminals use it to install fear in the victim. We urge the government to clarify and strengthen Canada’s self-defence laws for families facing credible extortion-related threats.

In addition, a community-wide initiative is crucial to support law enforcement efforts. Providing resources and training from the Federal and Provincial governments to the Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF) in Brampton. This task force can continue to protect our well-being.

In the Peel Region, the number of business-related extortion cases has risen dramatically, from 50 in 2023 to 153 in 2024 and now to 172 so far this year. There has been a dramatic increase in extortion cases within Brampton, and some don't even report extortion out of fear. South Asian families are concerned about whether they will be next. We, as Brampton's citizens, demand change.

We urge local, provincial, and federal leaders, including the Mayor of Brampton, MPs, MPPs, and the Premier of Ontario, to take action to stop organized extortion and protect the public.

Sign this petition to demand changes that will help end organized extortion in Brampton and build a safer, stronger community for all.

Brampton deserves to be safe.
