End Nitrogen Pollution on Long Island

End Nitrogen Pollution on Long Island
The Issue
Nassau County, a cherished and vital region of Long Island, faces a growing environmental crisis due to nitrogen pollution. Nitrogen-based fertilizers, commonly used in agriculture and landscaping, are a predominant source of this pollution. When these fertilizers enter our waterways, they trigger harmful algal blooms, which deplete oxygen levels, jeopardize marine life, and severely disrupt aquatic ecosystems.
According to the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan, excess nitrogen in drinking water can have detrimental health effects, including an increased risk of certain cancers and methemoglobinemia, or "blue baby syndrome," in infants. Furthermore, nitrogen pollution contributes to coastal dead zones that threaten local fisheries, recreational activities, and the health of our bays.
Studies from environmental advocacy groups indicate that transitioning to organic farming and employing eco-friendly landscaping practices significantly reduce nitrogen runoff. By ending the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers, Nassau County can protect its water quality, preserve its natural habitats, and ensure the health and safety of its residents.
Urgent action is required to safeguard our environment. The Nassau County government should lead the charge by outlawing nitrogen-based fertilizers and promoting sustainable alternatives.
Sign this petition to call on the Nassau County legislators to take decisive action against nitrogen pollution and pave the way for a healthier future for all Long Islanders.
