End Mass Surveillance in Joliet - End ALPRs

End Mass Surveillance in Joliet - End ALPRs
The Issue
Who is impacted?
Everyone in Joliet: residents, workers, and visitors. Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) track every car, every day, no matter who’s driving. Innocent people are being recorded and stored in government databases without consent.
What’s at stake?
If this continues, Joliet becomes a city where movement is monitored and privacy disappears. Ending ALPR use protects our freedom to travel, meet, and live without being tracked.
Why act now?
An audit revealed that federal agents accessed Evanston’s city cameras, showing how local data can easily reach outside hands. Flock Safety — the company behind Joliet’s ALPRs, has also suffered breaches exposing vehicle locations and travel patterns. These networks are spreading quickly, often without public input, and once installed, they rarely come down. Now is the time to stop mass surveillance before it becomes permanent.
We, the undersigned, call on the City of Joliet to halt the use and expansion of ALPR systems and to hold a full public review of their impact on privacy, safety, and civil rights.
