End Mass Surveillance in Henrico County, Virginia
The Issue
LPRs, are cameras made by multiple companies to read license plates as cars drive by. The initial goal of these cameras was only to use this data to catch genuine criminals, or people running red lights, but these cameras, and other types, are now being used almost exclusively for surveillance. A new type of Surveillance cam is placed on the sides of trails, and follow the movements of people as they pass by, blatantly tracking them. These cameras do not only read license plates, but they also have the ability to recognize how many people are in your car, who they are, and what they are wearing.
Some of these cameras have the ability to recognize you simply by the way you walk. They also, as said before, listen to every word those walking on the sidewalks near them say. These mics, which are separate from the preexisting cams (although, SOME of these cams do have mics), have the ability to hear EVERY WORD YOU SAY, running the audio through AI to detect gunshots, however, if its running EVERYTHING it hears through AI, whats preventing it from, say, logging every word the camera hears, and sharing that data to who-knows-where? This ties into a, sort of already mentioned problem, in order for these cams to do what they're "meant" to do, that being catching criminals, it has to record EVERYTHING it sees, everyone that passes by, their cars make and model, the dent 2" from the license plate on the bumper, EVERYTHING. And a lot of these cams have backdoor access that is STUPIDLY easy to hack, or even just straight up FIND ON THE INTERNET. it logs EVERYTHING, every detail, every number, everything it can see, and sometimes it compiles this data in a readily accessible way!
Not only are the cameras built for surveillance, but they are also being used for stalking people. There have been NUMEROUS cases of police officers, government officials, and even regular people, getting access to the video feed from these cameras in order to stalk ex-girlfriends/wives, obsessions, and enemies, bypassing the required reason for viewing a camera by saying its a "test" view. Flock is not strict enough with these cameras, and this, combined with massive evidence of these cameras being used for mainly surveillance, has led me, and millions of others across the nation and even just the state, to advocate for the removal of these cameras altogether.
It is apparent that the Federal government will not ban flock cameras, so the only way we can fight flock is by focusing on local governments and leaders, to tell them that;
WE, THE PEOPLE, WANT FLOCK OUT!
Of course, do call your reps, theoretically there is a way we can pass some anti surveillance legislation nationally without the president, but it'll be hard
