May is Mental Health Awareness Month

This month is more than just a reminder — it's a plea for compassion, change, and truth.

Mental illness does not make someone dangerous. It makes them human. It makes them someone in need of help, not punishment.

My husband, Craig, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder years before the worst day of our lives. In the weeks before his accident, he checked himself into the hospital twice seeking help — June 21–25 and July 2–5. He was placed on new medications. He was trying.

But instead of receiving support, his suffering was met with silence… and then a 25-year sentence.

He wasn’t treated like someone in crisis.

He wasn’t treated like someone sick.

He was treated like a criminal for having a brain disorder.

How is that justice?

It’s not.

It’s punishment for being sick.

So during Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m not just raising awareness — I’m raising my voice for the countless families like mine. For the ones who are silenced. For the ones who are surviving a system that punishes instead of helps.

We are fighting for Craig.

We are fighting for mental health reform.

And we are fighting for a future where illness isn’t a life sentence.

If you believe in second chances, treatment over incarceration, and justice with mercy — please stand with us.
