End Logging at Douglas County Parks

End Logging at Douglas County Parks
The Issue
“I wasn’t going to cut those trees, those fir trees. I was always crazy about trees.” - Mildred Kanipe
Douglas County Parks are struggling with the loss of revenue from the general fund in recent years. Parking passes and other measures are in place but there is more to be done.
Unfortunately logging the parks repeatedly comes up as the next option under consideration. Busenbark Park was clear-cut in 2015 and now there is the proposed logging of Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park.
Even minimal cutting at Mildred Kanipe Park is unacceptable as these public spaces are supposed to be for the preservation and enjoyment of the public. Logging the trees disrupts the beauty of the wild areas enjoyed by so many. It is also a short term solution with uncertain returns.
We recognize the difficult situation the parks is in with regards to funding but we ask the department to explore other options. Third party grant funding, park adoption, expanded volunteering, and other proposals should be seriously considered and exhausted before logging ever comes to the table.
There's more we can do for our parks! We ask the parks department to end logging in the Douglas County Parks and move forward in a new direction for funding to ensure beautiful public spaces for us now and in the future.
What you can do to help our County Parks:
- Sign the Petition.
- Come to a meeting. Parks Advisory Board meeting Thursday, October 20th @ 9am Douglas Couthouse rm 310 The logging proposal of Mildred Kanipe Memorial park from the September meeting was pushed back until this meeting in October.
- Get out to the parks!
