"End Life-Chaining: Protect Dogs from Cruelty in New Zealand"
Dear Members of Parliament,
I am writing to you with urgency and heartfelt concern regarding the welfare of dogs in our country. Currently, it is legal to tether a dog to a small chain and confine them to that chain for their entire life. This practice is inhumane and incompatible with the values of compassion and respect that New Zealanders hold dear.
It is estimated that approximately 250,000 dogs in New Zealand live under such conditions. These sentient beings, capable of love, loyalty, and suffering, deserve better than a lifetime of neglect and misery. Allowing this cruelty to persist reflects poorly on our society and diminishes our shared humanity.
Furthermore, research has shown a strong correlation between animal abuse and the perpetuation of violence within families and communities. By turning a blind eye to such cruelty, we inadvertently endorse the suffering of vulnerable beings and fail to address a larger cultural problem. Is this the message we want to pass down to future generations?
As humans, we have the moral responsibility and capacity to recognize suffering and act to alleviate it. I urge you to take immediate action by implementing laws to:
1. Prohibit life-chaining of dogs: Set clear guidelines on tethering, including time limits, leash length, and mandatory access to appropriate shelter and care.
2. Mandate enrichment: Recognize that dogs are social, intelligent animals who require exercise, mental stimulation, and companionship.
3. Strengthen penalties for neglect and abuse: Ensure that cases of mistreatment are met with significant legal consequences to deter further cruelty.
4. Promote education and resources: Establish community programs to educate pet owners on humane care and responsible ownership.
Every dog deserves a life filled with love, care, and the opportunity to thrive. By enacting these laws, we not only improve the lives of countless animals but also foster a culture of kindness, empathy, and responsibility that benefits all New Zealanders.
I trust that you will give this matter the urgent attention it deserves. Let us take a stand for a more humane future and ensure that New Zealand remains a nation known for fairness, compassion, and justice.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response and to witnessing the progress we can achieve together.
Yours sincerely,
The People of New Zealand"
