The Issue

Growing up in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), I found myself and thousands of fellow students struggling with a digital program called Lexia. It's a name that resonates with countless hours of frustration, unproductive screen time, and a tedious learning process that has often felt more like an obstacle than an educational tool.

Lexia was introduced with the promise of enhancing our reading skills through a user-friendly platform. However, for many students, including myself, the reality fell short of those expectations. The interface is clumsy, the exercises repetitive, and the educational impact negligible. Instead of fostering a love for reading and comprehension, it has made learning a chore. For teachers and parents, it's evident that Lexia is not contributing to our educational growth as intended. In fact, it's a costly tool that detracts from valuable learning time.

Research shows that interactive and engaging learning environments are crucial for cognitive development and the cultivation of skilled readers. Lexia doesn't align with these research-backed educational strategies, lacking personalization and adaptability for varied learning needs. Its reductionist approach fails to inspire or challenge students, leading to disengagement and boredom.

Instead of clinging to a failing system, FCPS should invest in innovative and proven educational resources that truly benefit students. Tools that encourage critical thinking, creativity, and active participation can reshape our education system to support students' diverse needs and prepare them for a successful future.

We call on the decision-makers in Fairfax County Public Schools to prioritize our educational well-being by phasing out Lexia. Let's redirect resources towards programs and methods that invigorate learning and truly equip students for their future challenges. Join us in signing this petition to advocate for a more effective and inspiring educational experience in FCPS.
