Keeping Justice Victim/Survivor Centered
Dear Supporters,
As we continue this journey together, I’m proud to share that The #JustWhyMovement is making meaningful progress in restoring a justice system that values civility, accountability, and the voices of victims and survivors.
As mentioned in our previous update, we have officially partnered with the Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center (MCVRC). Together, we are building the momentum needed to create a justice system that is fair, balanced, and victim-centered. Together, we will get this done.
Over the past several weeks, the Just Why Movement has:
- Traveled to Annapolis to meet with legislators in person
- Conducted multiple Zoom meetings with delegates
- Submitted requests to the sponsors of House Bill 853 asking for amendments that would exclude first-degree murders from leniency-based provisions
- Reached out to members of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus, and we are currently awaiting responses
We continue to stress the importance of full accountability and how these amendments will profoundly impact our communities. When violent offenders — particularly first-degree murderers — are eligible for relief, victims and survivors are left carrying the weight of trauma while justice becomes secondary. A victim-centered justice system must honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the communities struggling to heal.
Your voice matters in helping shape reforms that protect victims, restore trust in our judicial system, and ensure accountability is not overshadowed by loopholes.
