The Issue

I'm sharing an experience that deeply impacts my life and calls for urgent change within Virginia's mental health system. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, handcuffed, and being taken across a 23-mile-long bridge, terrified and unaware of your destination. This is not just a nightmare—it was my reality. And it shouldn't be anyone's. This ordeal reflects the trauma of being involuntarily transferred to a faraway mental health facility, three hours from home, from a community I know and trust. People in crisis should not be subjected to this further distress.

The legal system was used against me, as I know it has been for many others, yet there were countless opportunities to pause and reassess this unjust practice. Instead, I found myself in the back of a police car, shackled and fearful, with the deputies refusing to provide any basic information about my destination or the reasons for the transfer. This is a violation of dignity and basic human rights, and it can lead to lasting PTSD. Real damage happens because of these policies that prioritize logistics over human compassion.

We must advocate for solutions that offer local care, support in familiar environments, and a humane caregiving approach. No one should be forced to endure trauma just to receive mental health services. Those who seek or require mental health support deserve to be treated within their own communities, surrounded by familiar faces and not uprooted without explanation or consent.

It's time to change a system where fear and isolation are imposed on those already vulnerable. Let's bring an end to the involuntary transfer of mental health patients to distant facilities when local care options can and should be pursued. By gathering signatures and raising our voices, we can push for the necessary changes to protect others from undergoing similar traumatic experiences.

Please sign this petition to demand local mental health care solutions and end the long-distance involuntary transfers that cause unnecessary trauma. Together, we can make a difference.
