In 1936 Charles Pogue was issued a patent for a gas engine carburator rated at 220 miles per gallon. Oil company stocks crashed, and soon Pogue's invention was stolen and he never spoke of it again. Oil companies lobbied the government for help, and in 1951 they created the Invention Secrecy Act, which legally allows the government to keep any technology secret if it threatens the economy or security. If an inventor violates this, they face imprisonment.
