The Issue

Migrant detention has become big business in Kentucky. In Grayson and other counties around Kentucky, jails and detention centers are importing federal immigration prisoners by the van load, despite having limited space. We believe it is immoral to profit from an agency (ICE) that makes news daily through demonstration of a complete lack of respect for civil liberties, human rights, or basic human dignity.

The Grayson County Detention Center, located in Leitchfield, Kentucky, is at the center of this troubling trend. By holding immigrant detainees for profit, this facility plays a part in a larger system that treats human beings not as individuals deserving of respect and compassion, but as mere commodities. This treatment stands in stark contrast to the values of justice, equality, and empathy we hold dear.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been under intense scrutiny for its practices, many deemed inhumane and unjust by advocacy groups and international watchdogs alike. Reports of families being torn apart, inadequate medical care, and unsuitable living conditions have painted a grim picture of the immigrant detention system across the United States. Specifically in Kentucky, overpopulation and underfunding are systematic issues that exacerbate these negative conditions.

The contract between the Grayson County Detention Center and ICE perpetuates these injustices. It's time to stand up for what is right. Our community should not be a part of a system that exploits individuals seeking safety and a better life. Ending the ICE contract would be a significant step towards restoring the moral compass of our community and ensuring human dignity for all.

By terminating this contract, the Grayson County Detention Center can redirect its resources towards more community-focused initiatives. Additionally, the facility could provide services that truly benefit residents, such as rehabilitation programs, educational opportunities, and local employment initiatives, fostering a safer and more prosperous community.

We urge the authorities to reconsider this partnership and choose compassion over profit. By discontinuing this contract, we can begin to realign with our core values of humanity and justice. Sign this petition and help end the ICE contract at the Grayson County Detention Center today.
