Growing up, I always believed schools were places where values like equality, respect, and fair opportunities were cultivated. However, my experience at Edison High School has been quite the opposite. Here, the pressure for students to engage in hypergamy—that is, to seek out relationships not based on mutual respect or compatibility but on perceived social and economic superiority—has got out of control.

In my own journey at Edison, I've witnessed numerous talented and intelligent students feeling undervalued because of the toxic environment this culture fosters. It seems success and worth are mistakenly measured by who you're dating rather than personal achievements or character. This culture not only undermines the self-esteem of many students but also perpetuates a cycle of inequality that has no place in educational settings meant to nurture growth and inclusivity.

Such an environment distracts from the primary purpose of education: learning and personal development. Instead of being a place where students can focus on academics, find their passions, and prepare for the future, Edison has become a hotspot for superficial social competition. This sets a harmful precedent and negatively impacts young minds during their formative years.

Edison High School, like every educational institution, has a responsibility to create an environment that encourages equality and mutual respect among its students. To combat hypergamy, I propose that the school administration implement several measures:

1. **Educational Workshops:** Host regular sessions explaining the negative impacts of hypergamy and promoting the importance of self-worth and respect.

2. **Counseling Services:** Strengthen support systems for students feeling pressured by social expectations, ensuring they have access to resources that emphasize their personal achievements.

3. **Diversity and Inclusion Programs:** Foster an environment where students learn to value diversity and appreciate individual differences, helping them to build more meaningful and equitable relationships.
