End Homework Overload: Protect Students’ Mental Health

The Issue

Students today are drowning in excessive homework, leading to severe stress, anxiety, and even depression. Studies have shown that overwhelming workloads negatively impact mental health, causing sleep deprivation, burnout, and suicidal thoughts among students.

According to a study by Stanford University, 56% of students reported that homework was a primary source of stress. The American Psychological Association has linked academic pressure to increased rates of depression and anxiety among teens. Furthermore, a study in the Journal of Affective Disorders found a direct correlation between high academic stress and suicidal ideation.

Countries like Finland, which assign minimal homework, consistently rank among the top in education while maintaining high student well-being. It’s time for the U.S. to follow suit and prioritize student mental health over excessive workloads.
