I feel deeply affected by the halal slaughter practices in the United Kingdom. To me and many others, it appears as a barbaric act, clashing violently with the values we uphold in our country. We believe in animal welfare as a fundamental principle, but unfortunately, these practices do not align with our ideals. "Halal" is an Arabic term which means "lawful" or "permissible", and when referenced to food, it signifies the dietary standards as outlined in the Qur'an. One main concern with halal slaughter is that, often, animals are killed without being stunned, causing severe distress and pain. The RSPCA estimates that over 3 million animals are killed without stunning each year in the UK itself for Halal meat (RSPCA, 2019). We request our government to consider ending such practices, to align with our nation's principles of animal rights and welfare. We must build a country where the welfare of every living being is respected and preserved.
