End gunfire during hunting season in Beaconsfield South
The Issue
Every morning, I wake up in Beaconsfield South, my home, and am greeted by the unnerving sound of gunfire. It's an unsettling and constant reminder that hunting season is upon us. For residents living in Beaconsfield, the noise isn't just bothersome; it's a source of fear and anxiety that keeps many of us on edge, inside our own homes. My upstairs neighbours are a young family of Ukrainian refugees. This annual assault retraumatizes them and other people with PTSD.
Lake St. Louis, a beautiful natural attraction and part of District F under federal migratory bird regulations, becomes a chaotic environment during hunting season. The serene beauty of the lake is shattered by the sounds of shooting, endangering both wildlife and the peace of our community. It is so bad, the Mayor has received several complaints, yet is helpless to do anything.
Under current regulations, from September 19 to January 2, hunters are allowed to shoot ducks (except for the prohibited Harlequin Duck). Similarly, Canada and Cackling Geese are targeted from September 26 to December 21, and Snow Geese have even fewer calm days. The loud cracks of gunfire break the tranquility we once enjoyed, affecting not just the birds, but all of us who share this habitat.
This is a call for change—not only to protect our avian friends but to restore peace and safety to our lives. We understand hunting has been a tradition and regulation compliant, but its impact on our community's quality of life is severe. We propose reevaluating the extent of hunting activity, particularly in densely populated residential areas to ensure a balance between tradition and the well-being of both humans and wildlife.
Let's come together to advocate for new regulations that limit the use of firearms near populated areas like Beaconsfield South during hunting season. Such changes would not eliminate hunting but ensure a safer, quieter space for families and animals alike. By signing this petition, we ask our local and federal authorities to recognize the disturbances caused and develop solutions that prioritize community safety while conserving wildlife.
Join us in making Beaconsfield a secure and serene place where we can all live without fear and our wildlife can thrive unharmed. Please sign and share this petition to help us bring about this necessary change.
