End Government Support for Christ-Phobia: Treat Christianity with Equal Respect
The issue
As a Catholic, a Christian, a father and a proud NSW taxpayer, I believe every religion deserves equal respect.
This petition has never been about silencing artists or denying anyone the freedom to express themselves.
It has always been about one simple principle: Christianity deserves the same respect as every other faith.
Many Australians know the words Islamophobia, homophobia and antisemitism. We believe it is time to recognise another reality: Christ-phobia—the singling out of Christianity for ridicule, contempt or mockery because it is Christianity.
Many Christians believe Divine Playhouse (formerly Unholy Playhouse) crosses that line, and we do not believe any NSW Government department or taxpayer-funded body should be associated with or support productions that many members of a faith community reasonably perceive as ridiculing what they hold sacred.
More than 6,500 Australians have already stood together by signing this petition, praying peacefully, contacting their MPs and raising awareness across New South Wales.
This is a David versus Goliath battle, but history has never been changed by people who remained silent.
Imagine what could happen if every Christian who loves Jesus Christ sent just one email, made one phone call, shared this petition with one friend, or wrote to one MP. Together our voices can make a difference, and together we can continue calling for equal respect for Christianity.
We respectfully call on the NSW Government to
- Clarify the nature of any relationship with Divine Playhouse
- End any government support if one exists,
- Conduct an independent review into how that relationship came about, publish the findings, and ensure taxpayer money is never used to support projects that mock or demean any religion.
