End Glasgow's Anti-working-class 'no drinking in public places' byelaw!
The Issue
End Glasgow's Alcohol in Public Places Byelaws!
Currently in Glasgow, it is illegal due to the byelaws to drink in public places:
"Under these byelaws, subject to certain exceptions, any person who consumes alcoholic liquor in a designated place or is found to be in possession of an open container containing alcohol in a designated place shall be guilty of an offence"
We are currently living through a cost of living crisis, which is largely a result of international corporations exploiting and profiting from people's misery. The impact of this is visible in many ways, be it in people struggling to meet rent, unable to afford their heating bills, or simply struggling to afford to pay for a basic food shop. As we head to summer, there will be thousands of families across Glasgow, unable to afford holidays, and will be stuck at home, frustrated and at times depressed. This is made worse due to the rising prices of alcohol in pubs, which mean many are unable to enjoy a day out, and to mingle with friends in their locality.
As the warm weather comes in, many of us will be stuck in flats, or in housing with no gardens, and with no sunshine in our areas due to the heavily built up schemes we live in. To enjoy a small drink in the sunshine, we are being blackmailed into going to the pub, where the prices are extortionate, and serve only the landlords of these pubs.
This byelaw is anti-working-class and benefits only pub, bars and restaurant owners, at the expense of the poor who simply wish to enjoy their local parks with a small beverage in the same way our neighbours in Edinburgh do.
Thus, we demand an end to these byelaws, so that this summer, people can enjoy a small drink in the sunshine, without being fined or arrested. We realise the concerns around this issue, so would request that even a cans and plastic bottles policy can be enforced instead. This would remove the arguments around violence as a result of glass bottles as weapons.
