The Issue

I call for an urgent examination of a deeply personal and national issue: the acceptance of gifts, donations, and other forms of contributions by our Members of Parliament and Lords in the United Kingdom. For me, the ideal of transparency, a cornerstone of our democracy, is becoming murky due to these practices. It has been alleged that some MPs do not even know who their donors are, as well as their policies, leading to potential conflicts of interest. According to Transparency International UK, there were 73 MPs who accepted gifts or donations in 2019. This practice can have a subtle, yet profound impact on the legislation our leaders support and the decisions they make on our behalf. It is time for a change. Our democratic principles demand that our elected leaders perform their duties without undue influence from undisclosed sources. We need legislation to halt these practices and ensure that our leaders' actions are in the best interest of the people they represent and not of obscure entities with deep pockets. Every citizen of this great country is equal under the Rule of Law and it is imperative that this is reflected in every aspect of our governance. The time for transparency is now. Please sign this petition and demand an end to the undisclosed gifts and donations to our MPs and Lords.
