End Gambling Adverts on Television and Social Media

The Issue

Gambling is an activity that many enjoy without negative consequences, but findings show that vast exposure to gambling adverts on television and social media platforms can pose a significant risk to the vulnerable, including minors, gambling addicts, and those with mental health issues. The UK's Gambling Commission reports in 2020 that around 0.8% of children aged 11-16 already bet with their own money, a total of nearly 55,000 children in England, Scotland, and Wales (source: UK Gambling Commission's Young People & Gambling 2020 Report). A 2019 study from Australia found that constant exposure to gambling adverts can normalize gambling behavior, increase recall of gambling brands, and can lead to an increased desire to gamble (source: BMC Public Health). This critical concern highlights the need to protect society from excessive, inappropriately placed, and potentially harmful gambling advertising. To prevent the insidious impacts of gambling advertising on our health and social welfare, we call for an immediate ban on all gambling adverts on television and social media platforms.
