The Issue

Floyd County Jail in Rome, GA currently has an agreement with ICE, known as the Section 287 agreement, which, according to the documentation from the agreement signed in 2019, allows them to arrest and detain people for ICE.

Why is this a problem?
1. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), ICE has been arresting people and deporting them without affording them the due process the constitution requires them to have.

2. ICE has been making mistakes in their arrests which have had detrimental consequences. For example, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father, was arrested and sent to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador even after a judge said he was not allowed to be deported to El Salvador because of threats to his life. Even though this mistake was acknowledged by the government, for a long time they refused to facilitate his return to the United States because they said he was a dangerous gang member. What evidence did they have of this? 1. He was wearing a Chicago bulls hat and hoodie. 2. He was standing outside of Home Depot. (AP News).

3. According to the Immigrant Defense Project and ICE's own handbook, ICE uses "ruses" to lie to people so they can gain access to enter their homes and conduct arrests without having the appropriate warrants

4. Many detainment centers that ICE uses are operating under deplorable conditions, where people have stated that they are unable to get changes of clothes (sometimes for up to ten days), they lack consistent access to water and their medications, and they are not allowed telephone access to contact loved ones or their lawyers. (LA Times).

Sign this petition to show the sheriff of Floyd County that the people of Rome and Floyd County do not want ICE to have any place in our local law enforcement as long as they continue to violate the U.S. Constitution,  participate in actions that demean valued members of our community, and infringe upon human rights

After signing the petition, please take a moment and send a comment to the sheriff's department telling them to end the contract with ICE!

Not sure what to say? Try this–
I'm a citizen of Rome/Floyd County, and I just want to express my wish that we end the existing 287 Agreement between ICE and the jail. ICE has been making mistakes in their arrests (such as Kilmar Abrego Garcia), and they are making people "disappear" without giving them time to have the due process rights that are afforded to them in the U.S. Constitution. As a citizen of Rome/Floyd County, I do not want our jail to be associated with such flagrant violations of the U.S. Constitution and human rights. Please end the 287 Agreement with ICE!
