I started this petition on January 17 of this year, and could have never expected to come this far. Today, I’m happy to share some incredible news:
Last week, we had a great conversation with President Jeffrey Armstrong, along George Hughes and staff representatives, about the future of surveillance on campus at Cal Poly. Following this conversation, President Armstrong confirmed that Cal Poly would be reassessing its relationship with Flock Safety. Specifically, barring (unlikely) opposition from ASI or Academic Senate, this relationship will be terminated on the contract’s expiration date in May 2027, and replaced with an LPR solution that maintains Cal Poly’s investigative abilities without compromising on safety or privacy.
In the meantime, I am happy to be working closely with Takuto Doshiro on expanding transparency and reporting policy during the remainder of the Flock system’s presence on campus, as well as working with the rest of the administration on solutions to take its place.
Last Wednesday, as a final nail in the coffin, Cal Poly ASI voted unanimously to pass resolution #26-11, calling for the contract’s nonrenewal and an open town hall on surveillance at Cal Poly, cementing community opposition and further urging the administration to honor their commitments. We expect a similar, if not identical, resolution to pass in the Academic Senate shortly into the 2026-27 school year.
Brief recap of everything else we've accomplished since January:
- Over 1500 petition signatures (that you guys)
- Hours of public comment at ASI
- Hundreds of thousands of social media impressions
- Consistent local news coverage
- Talks with campus administration
- Direct action (protests, walk-outs, canvassing, flier distribution)
- Enlisted multiple campus organizations, dozens of student and staff volunteers
By no means is DeflockSLO finished. Over the next year, we will work to keep the community updated, ensure that admin holds true to their word, and hopefully expand our efforts to more campuses and the greater SLO area. Thank you to everyone who has been involved up to this point, and I’m excited to keep you all updated as the effort continues.
