The Issue

The focus needs to shift toward educating men about restraint and respect, rather than subjecting young girls to this dangerous and life-threatening procedure.
FGM is known to cause severe health complications, both immediate and long-term. It can lead to infections, chronic pain, childbirth complications, and even death. According to the World Health Organization, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM in 30 countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia where the practice is concentrated. Alarmingly, every year, approximately 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing this cringe-worthy procedure.
While everyone is entitled to enjoy their bodies, FGM makes this natural journey painful and fraught with complications. What we need are comprehensive education programs that empower communities to abandon this practice. Men, in particular, must be included in these educational initiatives because they play a critical role in perpetuating or preventing the act. By encouraging open dialogues and providing access to accurate information, we can dismantle the myths and pressures that drive FGM.
Countries with high prevalence rates need to enforce and strengthen their legal bans while providing support for survivors. It's essential to work with local activists and organizations that understand the community dynamics and can offer support that respects cultural sensitivities while promoting change.
