The issue

I have witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by First Nations people in Australia due to the extortionate fees charged at ATM machines in remote Indigenous communities. As a frontline bank agent, I am deeply troubled by how these charges disproportionately affect individuals, particularly elders who may not speak English as their first language and therefore find it challenging to make fully informed financial decisions. This systemic issue is causing immense financial strain, leaving many without enough money for basic needs such as food.

Currently, ATM fees in these remote areas can be as high as $5 per transaction. This is compounded by the fact that the withdrawal limits imposed mean multiple transactions are necessary. Each transaction can incur a separate fee, leaving already disadvantaged communities even more vulnerable. The private ownership of ATMs means these charges are often unchecked, exploiting a sovereign people who already face significant economic hurdles.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't well-publicized, and many people are unaware of the daily struggles First Nations individuals endure in accessing their finances. Elders are particularly impacted, as language barriers and the lack of financial services in their own languages leave them susceptible to these predatory practices.

We are calling on the government to legislate against these predatory fees and impose a cap on ATM withdrawal charges in remote Indigenous communities. By enacting legislation to eliminate balance enquiry fees and reduce withdrawal charges, we can ensure that the Indigenous population is not further disenfranchised but is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

This issue isn't just about numbers; it's about fairness, respect, and acknowledging the fundamental right of First Nations people to access their own money without undue burden. It's time for action. I urge you to stand with us to demand change, to protect our most vulnerable, and to bring about equitable treatment for all First Nations people in Australia.

Please sign this petition to press the Australian government to put an end to these unjust ATM charges, and ensure a more equitable future for our Indigenous communities.
