End Exclusivity in Orania: Redistribute Land for Public Use in South Africa

The Issue

I was born and raised on the principle that South Africa belongs to all who live within her borders - a diverse union for all its citizens. Yet, my journey through the landscape of this beautiful country revealed a stark and painful disparity in Orania. Here, an exclusive community is permitted to segregate themselves from our budding, democratic nation.

I remember the face of a black farmer who was forcibly displaced from his land, a territory his family had cultivated for generations. Even in the shadow of the post-apartheid era, he was victim to policies designed to displace and disenfranchise.

Orania serves as a beacon of disparity, a symbol of an era we have tirelessly worked to leave behind. As of 2017, Orania is home to approximately 1,600 people - less than 0.01% of South Africa's population - who live on a sizable swath of land that could support a broader, more inclusive community [source: South African Government Gazette, 2017].

This petition calls for a stance against such exclusivity: it's time to contest the unbalanced use of Orania's land. We have a responsibility to our people, to the farmer I met - because in this South Africa we're building, everyone deserves a chance.

By signing this petition, you stand alongside those advocating for broader public use of Orania's land, stressing the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality that South Africa strives to uphold.

Stand with us, and sign this petition today. Stand for a country where all citizens have an equitable claim to the land that sustains them.
