The current typical practices of pet insurance companies unjustly penalize owners of senior pets (those aged 10 or above) by charging an extra excess, placing an unnecessary financial burden on families. These costs have startling consequences - families suffer, and in genuinely heartbreaking situations, beloved pets are sometimes abandoned. These practices have worsened post-COVID, with drastic increases being reported in premiums. According to the NAPHIA (North American Pet Health Insurance Association), pet insurance premiums have seen a steep rise in the period following the pandemic (2020-2021). It is clear that insurance companies are profiteering, leading to an increasing number of families being unable to afford the care their pets deserve. In these already challenging times, this trend is not only unfair but unethical, placing an unbearable weight on average families and jeopardizing pets' wellbeing.
