PETITION TO THE COUNCIL OF LACOMBE COUNTY

The residents of Mirror, Alberta, and surrounding areas experience significant noise disruption from routine Canadian National (CN) Railway train horn signaling at the Highway 50 at-grade railway crossing;In Mirror, Alberta.  Drivers and train operators could refrain from horn use except in emergencies, reducing noise pollution significantly without compromising safety. We are not asking for silence; we are advocating for balance—a solution that maintains public safety while respecting the peace of our community.

Transport Canada outlines a formal multi-step process allowing municipalities to grant train whistle/horn cessation at public at-grade crossings while ensuring all necessary public safety measures remain intact; We propose several actionable steps: install better signage and infrastructure to enhance safety without relying on horn warnings and increase community awareness about the disturbances caused by frequent horn use. 

Implementing train whistle cessation at this location would substantially improve the quality of life, sleep, and well-being of local residents without compromising safety;

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, residents and land owners of Mirror and Lacombe County, petition the Council of Lacombe County to:

Initiate the formal Transport Canada Train Whistle Cessation Process with Canadian National (CN) Railway for the Highway 50 crossing near Mirror, Alberta.

Direct County Administration to conduct or support the necessary Safety Assessment of the Highway 50 crossing to identify required upgrades (e.g., automated warning systems, signage, or pedestrian controls).

Pass a municipal resolution declaring train whistle cessation at the Highway 50 crossing once all Transport Canada safety standards are confirmed.
