Yesterday, Tony, a sweet seven year-old Alaskan husky mix and beautiful soul, was euthanized at an animal shelter here in the U.S.A. Despite the best efforts of many his life could not be saved and he wasn’t the only one. Unfortunately it’s mainly due to overcrowding and lack of resources. This is a call to action for all of us who believe in the inherent value of every life. It's time we addressed and changed the policies in this country that lead to the euthanasia of healthy animals in shelters across the United Sates.

Every year, thousands of healthy animals are euthanized simply due to overcrowding and insufficient resources. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized each year in animal shelters across the United States. This is not just a number; these are real, sentient beings like Tony, who deserve a chance at life.

Several European countries (including Italy since 1991, Germany, Portugal since 2016, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece) ban or tightly restrict euthanizing healthy pets and strays, permitting it only for reasons such as incurable suffering, serious danger, or public health risks, not overcrowding or convenience though rules vary by nation with no EU-wide standard. Unfortunately, the United States has yet to take this stand by also adopting many of these policies.

To address this issue would pose a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, we need to ban euthanizing healthy animals in shelters across this country and create local and federal government funding for shelters to expand their capacities and improve facilities, while also allowing for more staff and much needed medical attention. This can be achieved by allocating more federal and state budgets, help reward private donations, community involvement, volunteer programs and much needed medical care. Many of these goals could be achieved through limited tax incentives such as credits, exemptions and write offs related to shelters, staff, vet care and other animal welfare such as spay and neuter programs.

Secondly, promote awareness and support for robust adoption and fostering programs by creating financial incentives for adoption and fostering thus helping to ensure that more animals find loving homes. Partnering with local state and federal , social platforms, and schools can amplify these efforts, making sure every potential pet owner knows about animals in need the assistance available to help them.

Lastly, implement comprehensive spay and neuter programs to help control the population and reduce the burden on shelters and the need to put animals down. Offering free or government or tax subsidized spay and neuter services can significantly decrease the number of unwanted animals while also increasing heavy fines and criminal charges for backyard breeding and other animal cruelty.
