The Issue

Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems have become a ubiquitous part of the digital content landscape. While designed to protect intellectual property, DRM often restricts consumer rights, trapping them in unfair conditions. In the United Kingdom and globally, companies like Sony and Xbox impose DRM on their products, significantly constraining how consumers interact with the digital goods they purchase.

When a person buys a digital game, they pay the same price as a physical copy, yet they lack the same rights over ownership. Physical games can be lent, resold, or retained indefinitely without the need for complex permissions. Digital products, however, are entangled in DRM restrictions, which means a buyer never truly owns what they've purchased. This disparity not only undermines consumer rights but also reflects a broader issue of inequity in the digital marketplace.

Numerous instances have illustrated these constraints: accounts have been unfairly suspended, access to paid content revoked, and numerous users have found themselves at the mercy of corporation’s arbitrary terms. According to Statista, in 2022, the global digital game market reached over $150 billion, demonstrating the extent of this issue's impact. Millions of consumers are affected by these DRM practices that strip them of fundamental ownership rights.

Policymakers must take immediate action to establish regulations that protect consumers in the digital marketplace. Regulations should ensure transparency, demand clear communication around DRM restrictions, and grant consumers true ownership rights over digital purchases comparable to physical goods.

Let us stand together and demand our rights as consumers. By signing this petition, you are calling on governments and policymakers in the UK and globally to regulate DRM practices and secure fundamental consumer rights in the digital age. Together, we can create a fair and open digital marketplace for everyone. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
