The Issue

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects countless individuals and families across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 3 women worldwide have been subjected to either physical or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. In the United States alone, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc.

The solution begins with stronger enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of new policies that prioritize the accountability of abusers. Law enforcement agencies need to be better resourced and trained to handle domestic violence situations with the sensitivity and seriousness they deserve. Implementing mandatory rehabilitation and counseling programs for offenders could aid in breaking the cycle of violence.

Furthermore, we must increase support for survivors. This includes expanding funding for shelters, crisis hotlines, and mental health services that are crucial in helping survivors rebuild their lives. Educational programs that raise awareness about the dynamics of abusive relationships can empower potential victims to recognize warning signs early and seek help. Schools, workplaces, and community centers should be at the forefront of such educational initiatives.

We must create a society where survivors feel supported and believed, where they are not shamed but respected for their courage, and where they can access the resources they need to recover and thrive. Strengthening our approach to domestic violence requires a collective effort from all of us—citizens, legislators, law enforcement, and community leaders.

Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to enact reforms that will ensure stronger accountability for abusers and provide vital support for survivors. Stand with me today in the fight to end domestic violence and help create a safer and more compassionate world for everyone.

I am a survivor of domestic violence. For years, I lived in fear of a man who abused me, belittled me, and stole my voice. I stayed for my children, believing it was the best I could do in a situation that felt inescapable. But eventually, I found the strength and courage to leave, for both them and myself. Today, we live a life free from our abuser’s influence—a life that is happy and full of promise. I have reclaimed my voice, and I am using it now to stand against domestic violence.
