Dear Prime Minister Starmer and Honourable Members,

I am writing to urge you to end dog racing in the United Kingdom. Recent polls in Scotland and Wales show that two-thirds of the people support a ban, and legislation is now moving in both member countries, a sure indication that the whole of the United Kingdom feels the same.

As long as dog racing continues, greyhounds will suffer and die. The Greyhound Board of Great Britain reported 35,168 greyhound injuries, including 1,353 track fatalities between 2017 and 2024. An additional 3,278 greyhounds were reported destroyed for other reasons such as treatment costs or because they are deemed “unsuitable for homing” after their last race. This is no way to treat a dog.

Greyhounds are living, breathing family friends who deserve to be protected. It is for this reason that greyhound racing is about to end in its home country of the United States. Similarly, the only tracks in China and Vietnam were ordered to close in 2018 and 2023 respectively and the government of New Zealand has announced its intention to outlaw racing this year. The trend is with the greyhounds.
