End discriminatory school hair policies
The Issue
The morning of 31st August was like any other, until we girls were forced to remove our hair edges right outside the school gate. This was not just an invasion of our personal space, but also deeply demoralizing. Our hair is part of our identity—what does it have to do with our ability to learn or succeed academically? Such policing of our personal appearance is not only unnecessary but harmful; it causes emotional distress, stifles our ability to express our individuality, and ultimately, sends a damaging message about conformity and acceptance.
The incident on August 31st was far from isolated. Numerous girls and boys have endured similar treatment, being instructed to cut their hair or even sent home with claims that their hairstyles are 'unneat' or 'distracting'. These rules primarily target black hairstyles which protect our hair and is used as a form as self-expression which often naturally grows. It is a clear example of discriminatory practices rooted in outdated stereotypes and unjust power dynamics.
Educational institutions should foster an environment where students feel empowered to express themselves and focus on their learning without fear of reprimand over their natural appearance. According to the Dove CROWN study, Black girls are 3.4 times more likely to be perceived as unprofessional because of their hair, underscoring the broader societal issues at play. Schools must be places of inclusion and understanding.
Why is the right to express ourselves met with humiliation and so much so we are denied the access to education free of discrimination
We order the school to:
Place less restrictions on hair length
the demand for us to have edges and use eyebrow gel
The right to not be humiliated and forcefully sent home denying our basic right to education and one that is free of discrimination
