End digital beauty pressure on children

The Issue

At school, I constantly see people struggling with the pressure to look 'perfect,' to the point where some even starve themselves to fit the unrealistic ideals perpetuated by digital beauty standards. I see people scared they aren’t perfect to the extent they’ve started starving themselves. The ubiquity of social media and edited images creates an environment where children feel they must conform to these unattainable looks. This is not just damaging their self-esteem but also posing serious health risks.

This has been going on since 2017-2018 (since then to current time). This happened mostly after Snapchat was launched. This affects many people, especially kids, because when kids use beauty filters at such a young age it causes them to feel insecure and like they aren’t enough. Research published in Computers in Human Behavior found that filters increase body dysmorphia because your brain starts comparing your real face to the edited one. This has evolved because apps have started to evolve and the beauty filters feel more realistic. People also use photoshop to edit themselves, and some people may think that it's not photoshopped. And according to Medical News Today, constant exposure to beauty standards — especially through social media — increases the risk of low self-esteem, negative body image, eating disorders, and depression.

Research from reputable health organizations reveals that over 70% of teenagers are influenced by social media models, with many resorting to unhealthy practices to mirror these images. This alarming trend is driving a mental health crisis among young people, leading to issues such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

This petition calls for action from social media platforms, government agencies, and educational institutions to collaborate in curbing digital beauty pressure. We urge them to initiate education programs that teach children about body positivity and media literacy. Moreover, these platforms must enforce stricter regulations on digitally altered images, providing warning labels to indicate when content has been artificially enhanced. My goal is to help children feel more comfortable in their own body, they feel discouraged when they see celebrities looking “perfect” and the reality is all those pictures are layered with filters. I hope that this petition will help make sure that apps label anything that is filtered or photoshopped . I know it’s not something many people want to hear but I feel we should ban beauty filters that are very realistic for kids under 12. Not filters like dog ears on Snapchat, or filters that are clearly unrealistic.

By signing this petition, you empower our youth to lead healthier, happier lives free from the confines of artificial beauty standards. Let's create a future where children are celebrated for their individuality and natural beauty. Sign the petition to support this vital cause.
