End deaths and abuse in UK custody
End deaths and abuse in UK custody
The Issue
The United Families & Friends Campaign and 4WardEver UK reject the Prime Ministers response to a previous petition on the Number10 e-petition website. We challenge the Prime Minister once again to address the issues raised.
One might have thought that given the recent examples of blatant brutality by G20 police, and the fact that an innocent bystander, Ian Tomlinson, died as a result of that brutality; any response from Gordon Brown might have been more considered and responsive to ALL the demands the petition set out.
Advisory Note: This petition has been suspended until further notice!
The MP for Yardley, Birmingham UK has agreed to meet with a delegation with a view to making representation in Parliament - further news will follow.

..........................................................................................................
THE DEMANDS WERE:
Deaths in police custody must be investigated by a body that is genuinely independent of the police, unlike the recently established ‘Independent' Police Complaints Commission.'
Prison deaths must be subject to a system of properly funded investigation that is completely independent of the Prison Service.
Officers involved in custody deaths be suspended until investigations are completed.
Prosecutions of officers should automatically follow ‘unlawful killing' verdicts at inquests.
Officers responsible for deaths should face criminal charges, even if retired. Police forces are made accountable to the communities that they serve.
Legal Aid and full disclosure of information be made to the relatives of the victims.
