The Issue

Daylight saving time (DST) has been a contentious issue in Alberta, with many residents questioning its relevance and effectiveness in today’s modern world. Originally instituted during World War I as a measure to save energy, DST has long passed its usefulness in this regard. In fact, studies have shown that the shift in time has minimal effect on energy consumption and may even lead to increased electricity costs due to higher power usage in the darker mornings and deferment of usage to evening hours.

Moreover, the biannual time change disrupts our circadian rhythms, leading to sleep deprivation and related health issues. Studies published in journals like the "New England Journal of Medicine" and the "Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine" have linked DST transitions to an increase in heart attacks and strokes, as well as reduced productivity due to loss of sleep. Children and elderly people are particularly affected, leading to a decrease in school performance and general well-being.

Major economies including China and Russia have already abolished daylight saving time, switching to a fixed time schedule. Alberta has an opportunity to lead Canada in this forward-thinking and health-conscious initiative. By establishing a permanent time, we could enhance the quality of life for all Albertans with benefits to mental health, sleep hygiene, and even accident reduction. Further gains could be realized economically with a more consistent business schedule year-round.

The Government of Alberta must act now to end daylight saving time and adopt a standard time permanently. This change would ensure that Alberta joins other progressive regions globally that prioritize the health and productivity of their populations. Please add your signature to push for the repeal of DST and the adoption of consistent timekeeping. Your support can help bring a positive change that resonates with the needs and health of Albertans everywhere.
