End Daylight Saving Time in Alaska for Better Sleep and Business
The Issue
As an Alaskan resident, I have personally experienced the negative effects of daylight saving time. It disrupts my sleep cycle, making me feel constantly out of sync. The impact is not just personal - it's statewide. We are the northernmost state with minimal farming activities, particularly in areas from Fairbanks to Anchorage where daylight saving time seems like it works but not the whole state farms a lot.
Daylight saving time is a relic of the past that has no place in modern Alaska. It was originally introduced during World War I to save energy by reducing the need for artificial light in the evenings. However, today it disrupts our sleep schedules and harms our health.
Moreover, studies have shown that daylight saving time can negatively affect business productivity due to increased fatigue and decreased concentration among employees (source: American Psychological Association). As a state with unique geographical conditions and limited sunlight during winter months, these impacts are felt more acutely here than anywhere else.
Alaska is currently the one of many state in the contiguous United States that observes daylight saving time year-round - this means we lose an hour of sleep every day compared to other states like Hawaii. This practice needs to be reconsidered.
We call on both our local representatives at the Alaska State Legislature and national representatives at United States Congress to take action against this outdated practice that affects us all so deeply. Please sign this petition if you too believe it's high time we end daylight saving time in Alaska!
