The Issue

No one wants to get sick or hurt, but millions of Americans are punished for medical emergencies by having their credit ratings go down, their interest rates go up, and their chances go down.

Having medical debt doesn't mean that you're negligent with money. It shows that the healthcare system is dysfunctional since it often leaves people with bills they can't control, understand, or even check. It is unfair, wrong, and bad to use it to determine someone's creditworthiness.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has already made specific changes to limit the reporting of some medical debt, but these changes don't go far enough.

We ask you for:

  • No medical debt, no matter how much, should show up on credit reports.
  • Require that all medical debt entries that are already in credit files be taken out.
  • Don't let debt collectors record medical costs while disputes or insurance claims are still open.

Americans should have a credit system that looks at how they spend their money, not their health status.

The CFPB can make a nationwide rule that puts people, not money, at the core of our credit system.

We ask that you do something.
