End Corruption in Nepal and Protect Our Youth

End Corruption in Nepal and Protect Our Youth
The Issue
On Sept 8th in Nepal, the voices of the youth calling for justice and end of corruption were drowned out by the sound of gunshots and vicious brutality.
We hereby raise an urgent appeal regarding the grave human rights violations currently occurring in Nepal. Recent incidents reveal that police forces have opened fire on students wearing school uniforms, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 30 and over 1000 injured Gen Z youths so far.
These actions constitute serious breaches of international human rights law, specifically under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR, 1966), both of which Nepal has ratified.
Relevant UNCRC and ICCPR articles the Government of Nepal must uphold:
Article 6: Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his/her life.
Article 19: Children must be protected from all forms of violence.
Article 21: The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized.
Corruption has been a longstanding issue in Nepal, infiltrating various sectors from public service to law enforcement. It compromises the development and prosperity of our nation and tarnishes the hope of a brighter future for the younger generation. The effects of corruption are myriad, leading to inequity in access to resources, poor quality of education, and ultimately, a society where the vulnerable suffer the most.
The youth are the backbone of our country's future, and their safety and freedom to express themselves should be paramount.
We must take action now. We demand specific considerations as follows:
1) An independent investigation into the use of force by Nepal police & army
2) A justice and accountability mechanism for the victims who lost their lives or were injured (which could be a judicial process under current courts or a special tribunal created for this)
3) A commitment from the Nepal government, police & army to refrain from disproportionate use of force in future peaceful protests.
We denounce all forms of violence by the state and by the anarchists.
The time has come for us to stand united against corruption and violence. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer, fairer Nepal where the youth can thrive without fear. Let us show solidarity and demand change by calling upon our government to prioritize the rights and safety of its people over corruption and violence. Please sign and make your voice heard for a future where peace and justice prevail.
