The Issue

We, as parents and/or family members of children who are students at Liberty Elementary, are calling on the Chula Vista Elementary School District to end combination classes.

Our children have been in numerous combination classes during their time at Liberty. Some of these combination classes have included packed classes of 31 students (the legal limit according to California Educational Code for grades 4 and above). There are also students in these classes with IEPs and 504 plans. Dual immersion classes are not excluded. In addition, there have been curriculum changes for our teachers and children. Teachers have been expected to manage both the curriculum changes and curriculum for 2 different grades.

In addition to stacking classrooms full of children, Chula Vista Elementary School District is limiting funding for VAPA classes. Art will not be offered at Liberty Elementary. Art provides a necessary creative outlet for our children. Now, our teachers will be expected to include art in their curriclum.

How are our children receiving the education they deserve? Why are teachers leaving the classroom or retiring early? How are our IEP and 504 students receiving the services they need to succeed? Why are we not providing our students with opportunities to express their creativity outside the classroom?

Please sign this petition and demand that the Chula Vista Elementary School District end combination classes, make classroom sizes smaller, hire more teachers, and keep VAPA programs (music, physical education, drama, and art) intact at all schools.
