End Child Exploitation in Family Vlogs For Missouri and Kansas
The Issue
As cybersecurity professionals, parents, educators, and advocates for children’s rights, we understand the importance of protecting privacy, identity, and personal data. Yet millions of children are growing up with their lives permanently documented online before they are old enough to understand or consent to the consequences.
Children should not become content for profit. Across family blogs, vlogs, and social media channels, children’s most personal moments, from medical diagnoses and emotional breakdowns to daily routines and embarrassing milestones, are often shared with millions of strangers. These digital footprints can last a lifetime and expose children to risks including identity theft, AI-generated impersonation, stalking, exploitation, and the permanent loss of privacy.
When a family’s income depends on views, sponsorships, and engagement, children can become the product rather than the priority.
Unlike child actors, many of these children lack meaningful legal protections over their earnings, working conditions, privacy, and future digital rights. This concern is particularly pressing in Missouri and Kansas, where family vlogging is increasingly popular.
Children deserve the opportunity to grow up without having their childhood commercialized. This is why calling for legislation in Missouri and Kansas that:
1. Protects children from commercial exploitation in monetized family content.
2. Requires earnings generated through children’s participation to be placed into protected trust accounts.
3. Gives children the legal right to request the removal of content featuring them once they reach adulthood.
4. Prohibits the publication of sensitive or exploitative content involving minors.
5. Establishes modern digital child labor protections for the social media era.
Childhood is not content. Every child deserves the right to privacy, dignity, and a future free from a permanent digital footprint they never chose.
