The Issue

For far too long, Missouri's incarcerated populations have faced deplorable medical conditions under Centurion Health, a company entrusted with providing healthcare in state correctional facilities. Our personal experiences with the system have been anything but reassuring, answering concerns regarding medical neglect at an alarming rate of over 90% the reasons people reach out for help to Beyond the Walls, Inc. and Collectively Changing Corrections. Our prisons are filled with individuals who deserve adequate medical attention, yet the neglect is rampant, jeopardizing lives daily.

The prison healthcare system should be a beacon of hope for rehabilitation, not a sentence of suffering. Understaffing in Missouri's prisons has not only exacerbated the medical neglect faced by inmates but has also led to the mistreatment of overworked nursing professionals. How can they provide compassionate care when they themselves are barely holding on?

Centurion Health, contracted by the Missouri Department of Corrections, has consistently fallen short of its responsibilities. There have been numerous reports and testimonies highlighting the dire conditions, from inmates being denied critical medications to delayed treatments that have resulted in severe complications. The oversight is glaring, and the repercussions are dire.

What we need is a full retraction of Centurion Health's contract and a thorough re-evaluation of how healthcare services are administered within Missouri prisons. This calls for hiring more qualified healthcare professionals and ensuring that there are enough staff members to provide humane and timely care. Implementing stricter standards and accountability measures can turn the tide, reducing fatalities and improving the quality of life for those serving time.

Let's stand together and demand systemic changes that uphold the dignity and health of all Missouri inmates. We need the Missouri Department of Corrections to prioritize the welfare of both its inmates and staff by finding alternative healthcare providers that commit to these values.

Sign this petition to voice your concern for urgent reform and accountability in Missouri's correctional healthcare system. Your support can help bring about a change that saves lives.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this information. In order to respond to the constituents concern, I need their names and contact information. If it more convenient, they are welcome to contact me directly at my office in Jefferson City or send an email to this email address: Don.Mayhew@house.mo.gov I read your petition and it appears that you have basically 3 choices: • File an initiative petition to affect a change in the law requiring some of the items of concern (if it is a question of law, which I don’t think that it is). (probably not the best option at this point) • Deliver the petition to the Governor’s office (this is the most appropriate action at this time since the Governor is in charge of the Executive Branch and responsible for prisons) • Ask the House Budget Committee and the Senate Appropriations Committee to defund the contract in question. (this is not likely to happen since there must be a contract for health care with some provider) As the Chairman of Corrections Committee, I will commit to having my staff look into this issue to see if there is a legislative solution. If a hearing is warranted then we will proceed there. Thank you for reaching out. Don Mayhew, Dist. 124 From the Office of Rep. Mayhew: Thank you for reaching out. I’m the staff member handling this issue for Rep. Mayhew, and before we can move forward with researching the concerns raised in the petition, I need the names and contact information of the individuals directly affected. They’re also welcome to contact me at the Capitol or reply to this address: Joshua.Vroman@house.mo.gov Once I have that information, I can begin verifying the specific claims and reviewing the contract oversight history, grievance documentation, and any existing reports on Centurion Health within the Missouri Department of Corrections. That will help us determine what is substantiated, what falls under executive authority, and whether there is any potential legislative angle. Please send whatever details you are able to share so I can proceed. Thank you, Joshua Vroman Legislative Assistant Office of Rep. Don Mayhew, District 124
